If I were Oprah and had zillions of dollars, I would give all of you some of my favorite things, including the following:

  • Waterless hand sanitizer for your home, purse, and car

U2 Report

We had a great time at the U2 concert! Jenny, her sister Katy, Katy’s husband Eric, our friend Sarah, and I piled into the Hoffs’ car in Midlothian and rode together. Traffic wasn’t as bad as expected in the area. Thanks to a tip from Keith at BagOfNothing.com, we parked at Lincoln Square at Collins and Road to Six Flags. If you spend at least $40 there and leave your receipt on your dashboard, you can leave your car there during any Cowboys Stadium event for free. It’s only about half a mile from the stadium so it worked great. We ate dinner at Jason’s Deli and reached the stadium before 7:00.

The Stadium and Stage

As you’ve probably seen, Cowboys Stadium is BIG. Really big. You can only enter through the gate listed on your ticket, so we took a long walk to the other side of the stadium and entered through the party pass area. Our seats were in the lower bowl “behind” the stage but still gave us a great view since U2 designed the show to play in all directions. The stage was circular with an inner ring for the band’s equipment, an open area for screaming fans, an outer ring where Bono, The Edge, and Adam could walk among the crowd and get closer to our side of the stadium, and two movable bridges linking the two rings. A huge spider crab / spaceship thing towered over the stage and suspended a fascinating video board made of hundreds of movable panels.

Muse

A Welsh band named Muse kicked off the show with a high-energy blend of strong vocals, guitar, and keyboard. Think Depeche Mode meets The Juliana Theory. I actually recognized one of their songs from the radio and liked it, but I enjoyed several of their other songs even more. The sound was very loud and muddy, as I expected, but I heard enough that I definitely plan to check them out on iTunes.

U2

U2 played for two hours, finally wrapping up around 11. U2’s website posted the set list in case you are curious. The sound was not quite as loud as Muse’s and clearer, about as good as I would expect in a stadium like this. I keep hearing that the sound in the upper deck was terrible. In general, I still prefer listening to music at home so I can hear every detail, but the energy of the crowd and band in a live setting is enough to bring me to a concert on occasion.

With such a large catalog, U2 couldn’t possibly play every song that every fan wanted to hear, but they did include good mix of old and new stuff with a couple of my favorites: “With or Without You” and “Where the Streets Have No Name”. Other highlights include their rendition of “Amazing Grace”, accompanied by many of the 70,000+ fans. I LOVE hearing massive crowds sing together. It reminds me of the choir that we’ll join in heaven, millions upon millions of voices strong, singing praise to God night and day.

One of the things I like about U2 is their use of their fame and influence to make a positive difference, particularly in Africa. Bono in particular has lobbied for AIDS funding, bednets to fight malaria, and debt forgiveness for African nations and made large strides in boosting awareness of these issues among Westerners like us. They weave Christian themes into their music – love, brotherhood, faith, forgiveness – with power and grace yet somehow avoid sounding preachy. Their music, whether recorded or in concert, touches your spirit and reminds you that there is more to life than merely living, that God has called each of us to something higher and better.

Water is Basic 5k Report

Despite the cool weather and early start time, Jenny, Brenden, and I had a fun time at the Water is Basic run on Saturday. J & B did the “one-mile” fun run, which was actually more like two miles because the turnaround point wasn’t clear. I ran-walked the 5k. Due to some knee pain, I didn’t run as much as I’d hoped, but I loved being surrounded by so many runners all doing their thing for a good cause. At church this evening we heard that nearly 500 runners participated, raising around $12,000. That’s about 4 wells, enough to provide clean drinking water for several thousand people. Praise God for technology that can save lives!

Observations of a momma – random facts edition

Since I love the “10 Random facts about me” posts that Andy does every once in a while, I thought I would combine an Observations post with one of those – so here’s 10 random Jenny facts and 10 random observations about Brenden:

About me:

  1. You know that little bit of skin between your top gum and your lip? (Half of you are reaching in your mouth, aren’t you?) I don’t have one. An unfortunate incident with a brick hearth when I was a toddler took care of that.
  2. I hate being cold. HATE it. So I’m struggling as the weather cools off, since I’ve got an extra heating unit on board, but he’s not heating me up enough to keep me from looking for warmer clothes!
  3. Yes, I did go with Andy to the Bluebonnet Nudist resort, but no, I did not participate. Yes, it was odd. No, it was not that uncomfortable. Yes, I will probably go back with him next time he runs.
  4. I don’t wear high heels. Ever. I walk like a dork in them.
  5. I am a notoriously picky eater, but I love cooking new recipes. I may or may not eat them, but I like cooking them!
  6. Same goes for craft projects. I’ll pick up a new hobby for about a year, then stop. It drives Andy crazy.
  7. I used to be a pretty good photographer, until I got a digital camera. I don’t know what happened, but I just can’t take a good picture with one.
  8. I don’t run. I’ve never liked it, even as a kid. I did horribly on the presidential fitness tests because I could never finish the mile in time. But I like doing the 5k races in the fall – just walking them. My favorite is the Jingle Bell Run in Fort Worth.
  9. I love to bargain shop – garage sales, Craigslist, Goodwill, etc. Especially now, with Brenden and all his toys and clothes. Why pay a whole lot for toys and clothes that don’t last? (This is the reason I’m having trouble finding winter stuff for me – see #2)
  10. For some reason, this pregnancy I’ve been craving sugar. I haven’t had a lot of wild cravings for things, but if I want something, it’s always sweet. Ice cream doesn’t last long in our house.

On to Brenden:

  1. He’s talking up a storm! Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s English yet. Who has been teaching him Chinese when I’m not looking?
  2. He has discovered Sesame Street – “melmo” is his favorite character.
  3. He also likes to “mow”. He drags his play mower all over the living room chanting “mowmowmow” as he goes.
  4. The poor guy has the worst diaper rash I have ever seen, but nothing seems to help, not even prescription medication. I think we’re about to have to make a trip to the doctor to come up with a new plan.
  5. We’re no longer using bottles at all – it’s sippy cups all the way! However, the pacifier is still in heavy use when he sleeps. There’s about 4-5 in the crib at any time, just in case he wakes up.
  6. He’s wearing 24 month clothes, but we’re having troubles with pants. If they fit his waist, they’re too short. So he’s been “sagging” a lot lately! Good thing Target diapers are kind of cute.
  7. He can’t stand loud noises. Noises seem to be the only thing that scares him. So we’re trying to get him used to the vacuum, the mower, etc. My blow dryer sends him running down the hall.
  8. His favorite foods at the moment: bananas, black beans, and cheese. Not all at the same time. Other stuff will be good for a day, then he hates it the next. Pizza seems to be off the good list this week.
  9. We’re trying to teach him to say Jonathan. So far, the closest he’s gotten is “nah-nah-nah” – which I thought was pretty good!
  10. He loves running full speed around the house – and chasing the cat’s tail. Jedda is not amused.

That’s all I’ve got for now! Maybe next time we’ll do a “Q&A edition” – anybody have any questions?

School Spirit

Friday night Jenny’s parents, sister, and brother-in-law came up for the evening. First, we had pizza and cake to celebrate Marilyn’s birthday. Then Jim, Eric, Jenny and I went to the Colleyville Heritage – Euless Trinity football game while Marilyn and Katy stayed home with Brenden. Neither Jenny nor I had been to a high school football game in years. Jenny hadn’t been since she was in high school. Although the temperature was low and our Panthers got smoked by Trinity, we all had a great time anyway. Plus our band was better. Surrounded by local junior high and high school students and their parents, we remembered our own high school days. Jenny participated in many games as a member of the band and flag corps, while I watched from the stands with no responsibilities. I was amazed at how young the high school students looked through my 30-year-old eyes.

Although the three major education options (public, private, and home school) all have pros and cons (another post for another time), we are leaning strongly toward public school for the boys. Assuming we take that route, Colleyville Heritage will be their high school, so we are trying to get involved with CHHS and support its activities. When I was growing up, my neighborhood was much bigger and more affluent. Some of the teenagers attended the local high school (MacArthur) like Lisa and I did, while many others went to private schools. The neighborhood was a nice place to grow up but didn’t have a single school to rally behind. Our new neighborhood is filled with signs supporting CHHS and the middle school. Two doors down from us lives a member of the swim team whose parents proudly display her sign out front. Someone from the theater department posted a sign at the neighborhood’s entrance advertising this weekend’s play. I love the support that our neighbors give to the schools. We hope to attend the Christmas choir concert and other events as able.

Traffic

Wow!

I use a WordPress plugin to track my traffic – which posts and pages people view most, which links they click, and how they reach my site. I average around 100-150 different page views per day. Wednesday I had 830 separate page views. The traffic spike resulted solely from my nudist resort post, which is also one of the most commented posts I’ve ever written. I guess that one got people’s attention! =)

Thanks to everyone for visiting my site. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to know that people around DFW, Texas, and the rest of the world actually read what I post.
