Runner Fog

This morning my alarm went off at 4:45am, the time I normally start sending some of my flight releases at work. I should have been a zombie. Good sleep eluded me, as it often does when something forces me to arise at the time normal people do. But this was race day. Adrenaline covers a multitude of complaints.

I left in the dark, my family comfortable and warm in their beds. I arrived in the dark as well, joining thousands of others just as crazy. After picking up my bib, chip timer, and swag, I shuffled to the back of the giant corral to await the starting horn with the rest of the herd. In all, 3691 runners showed up early for the Cowtown 10k, huddling together in the morning cold.

This is what 3000+ runners look like. See how far away the starting arch is?

Soon we were off. Since I got stuck in the back with the walkers and slower runners (poor planning!), it took a while to break free and reach my target pace. But soon I found myself running through the park with my pace group. The sun had emerged. Shallow fog hung like glowing ghosts over the grassy hills. I looked ahead and saw dozens of tiny breath clouds emerging from the runners, also glowing in the morning sun. I found the sight quite beautiful. We were a pack of wolves on a morning hunt. Our prey was the finish line. And endless boxes of free bananas.

I had three goals for the race. In order of priority and difficulty, they were:

  1. Cross the finish line under my own power
  2. Set a personal record (PR) for this distance
  3. Break 50 minutes

I succeeded in the first two, and barely missed the third, finishing in 50:01. Close enough, says I.

Back to the Beach

We’ve booked our next vacation for October, a four-night cruise to the Bahamas sailing from Miami. It’s very similar to the one we took in October 2010, but this time we’re trying a new cruise line: Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL distinguishes itself mainly through flexible dining (no rigid 6:00 and 8:30 dinner seatings) and beautiful flower artwork on the bow of each ship. Our itinerary takes us to Grand Bahama Island, Great Stirrup Cay (NCL’s private island), and Nassau.

My goal is to try every major cruise line eventually so I can pick a favorite. So far we’ve sailed with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, with Carnival taking a slight lead. Research is hard work, but someone has to do it.

One interesting wrinkle on this trip is that we’re traveling with some good friends from our home group. We plan to have dinner together and stay flexible during the day depending on what everyone wants to do. They hope to dive (maybe with sharks!!), while we plan to spend some time at Atlantis and on the beach. I haven’t really vacationed with friends since my high school youth group days, so this should be different and fun. Fortunately, unlike those youth group trips to the beach, vacation sex on this trip won’t earn me an awkward meeting with my youth pastor.

Haiku Tuesday 18 – POTUS

Yep, it’s back! In honor of President’s Day, this week’s topic is the President of the United States, aka POTUS. Feel free to be political, funny, random, or whatever. It’s YOUR haiku. Remember the form: 5 syllables – 7 syllables – 5 syllables.

Number Forty-Four
A good man, but can he fix
This gigantic mess?

Leading the free world
Pressure, critics ’round the clock
I don’t want that job.

Your turn.

As some of you know already, I have connected my site to Facebook. I hope this move will drive up traffic. More importantly, it will make life easier for my readers who also use Facebook. By clicking the “Like” button at the right of this page, you can add all my new posts to your Facebook News Feed. That way you’ll be notified of new posts without having to visit my site every day. Eventually, all your blog comments will cross-post between here and Facebook as well.

I hope you enjoy this new feature. Please spread the word!

Organic Produce Co-op-ish Thing

Earlier this month I told you about a fruit and vegetable service we’ve been trying called Bountiful Baskets. We have enjoyed it, but for us it presented two drawbacks:

  • In our area, it doesn’t offer any organic produce.
  • The pickup time is 7:00-7:30am on Saturday morning. I’m normally coming home from work at that time and might not be able to get there by 7:30, so Jenny had to wake the kids up early and drive up to Grapevine to get our goodies.

So we’re switching to another co-op-style service that our friends Sarah and Chris use called Your Health Source. It offers all-organic produce that’s as local as possible. Plus the pickup time for the Bedford location is 10:00-12:00 on every other Tuesday, which works much better for Jenny. The price is higher, but since we’re trying to get our whole family to eat healthier, we’re willing to pay more for produce that’s free of pesticides and other weird stuff. Our first pickup is March 1.

Jonathan Takes a Walk

In the last week or two, Jonathan has decided that walking is a good method of transportation rather than merely an amusing trick that makes people clap and cheer. So he is practicing. A lot. Check him out!
