Rockin’ Out and Standing Up

We have digital cable from Time Warner, which includes over 40 channels of digital music. One station is all 80s music. We had some friends from church over for dinner and played 80s music. It was great! They just played Terrance Trent D’arby’s “Wishing Well”, which I hadn’t heard in a LONG time. I vary the station by my mood. When I’m reading my Bible during breakfast, I like the soothing piano/new age station. In the evening if I’m hanging out alone, I often jam with the smooth jazz station. During the day I might switch to one of the rock, gospel, or bluegrass stations. It’s great!

You might have heard that the FAA has proposed a $10 million fine for Southwest for missing some maintenance inspections on dozens of aircraft and then continuing to fly them for a few days afterward. Yes, we screwed up by missing those inspections, and last March we voluntarily admitted it to the FAA. After realizing this, we worked out a plan with the FAA and Boeing to inspect those aircraft over a 10-day period. For both proactive inspections like these and minor aircraft repairs, it is common to have a short grace period to complete the work, such as a certain number of days or flights. Boeing and our FAA inspectors approved our plan, we inspected the aircraft, and the FAA considered the case closed in April. Apparently a couple of other FAA employees disagreed and took their “story” to an influential Minnesota congressman who is making a huge deal about it. I am very confident in the safety of our aircraft and maintenance program. I’ve dispatched tens of thousands of flights carrying hundreds of thousands of people; sent my wife, family, and friends on our flights; and personally flown Southwest many, many times with full confidence that each aircraft was safe. I hope and expect that the FAA will at least reduce this ridiculous fine if not cancel it once they hear the full story. You can read some of Southwest’s official response on southwest.com.

I had recurrent training this week, which meant 3 days of going in at 7:00am to hear about various topics. Jenny and I carpooled all three days, just like in the old days when I worked in Technology. I enjoy recurrent training because it’s a chance to be with coworkers in a different setting, get refreshed on some things I’ve forgotten, and learn about what’s ahead. Dispatch has a new weather and flight plotting system scheduled for this summer, better access to a high-tech radar system at several airports, and a new type of navigational capability called RNP that should save us time and fuel plus improve safety and reliability. There’s always something brewing, it seems, and I like that.

The Airline Biz

Surely I’m biased, but I think the airline business is both one of the most difficult and most fascinating industries around. Certainly it’s one of the most competitive, with constant fare wars, extremely high costs, many players, and a host of other complications. Right now rumors abound of mergers, including Northwest-Delta and United-Continental. Although I have no insider knowledge, I think there’s a chance Southwest will jump in if those mergers go through. We could buy assets of an existing airline or buy one outright. I keep wondering about AirTran, an Orlando-based airline that operates a hub in Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport and a major city that we don’t serve. It flies 737s like us plus 717s, a smaller aircraft from Boeing that would allow us to serve some “thinner” markets that don’t have enough traffic for 737 service. Their costs are low, as is their market capitalization (the value of all its stock). The hardest part would be merging the two employee groups, but we’ve done it before (see Morris Air). This should be an interesting year!

Speaking of Southwest, have you visited our Southwest community page? A number of employees post articles on a variety of topics, and many of our customers respond. It’s well-done and quite informative!

I also bet you’re hoping for a baby gender update, eh? Patience, patience…Our appointment is at 4:00 pm. I’ll post it tonight for all to see after our CARES team meeting.

Never a Dull Moment

Here are some highlights from our trip to Oakland and Phoenix:

  • Each luncheon had over 70 new hires and several SWA leaders, including President Colleen Barrett.
  • Our friend Kyle, who is about to turn 27, got hit on by not one, but two different 40-something flight attendants, aka “cougars”.
  • After Jenny and BB called it a night, I stayed up until about 2:00am with three of Jenny’s coworkers eating pizza, chatting, and laughing our heads off.
  • Some impatient maniac in Oakland actually cussed out Jenny’s boss after nearly backing into her.
  • We’ve sold nearly 600 new-hire sponsorships, each of which gives the sponsor a cute racing duck in the SWA Duck Derby at Sea World San Antonio in May. We managed to safely bring home all 7 proto-ducks, not losing one to theft by admiring employees.
  • I rode in the cockpit jumpseat with a former U2 pilot and Federal Flight Deck Officer (an armed pilot trained in cockpit defense techniques).

It was a great week, but we’re definitely glad to be home.

BB Gender Poll and More

Thanks to all who participated in my first poll! Obama was the clear winner with 44% of the vote, followed by McCain. Note that Texas’s primary is March 4, and it’s an open primary, meaning that you can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary (but not both) regardless of your party affiliation. Since it looks like McCain has the Republican nomination in the bag, the only primary that matters is the Democratic. Apparently Clinton has a large following in Texas and is predicted to carry the state. So if you happen to dislike Hillary, you need to vote for Obama whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat. =)

As you can see, I’ve created a new poll on the right: BB’s gender! Some people have “feelings” about babies’ gender before the sonogram reveals it. Others simply want to guess. Now is your chance! This poll will run through Feb 27, when we hope to find out the truth. Happy voting!

Jenny and I are back from Orlando after a very successful but draining trip. We leave for Oakland on Tuesday, fly to Phoenix Wednesday night, and fly home for good on Friday of next week. We’re having a great time, but it will be great to be home for an extended time once next week is over.

Happy belated Valentine’s Day to all! Jenny and I had a lovely dinner at Cafe Cipriani in Las Colinas (try the souffle!) and walked around Lake Carolyn a bit after doing some shopping. I remember flying her to New Orleans for our first-ever Valentine’s Day about 6 weeks after we started dating. How time flies!

Back in Texas, Temporarily

We are back after quite a journey! We left on Monday for Chicago, planning to do a new-hire luncheon and work a booth at the Chicago Message to the Field, hop the last MDW-BWI flight that night, and repeat in Baltimore the next day. Unfortunately, MDW was fogged in all day, and SWA shut down our operations there. So we went straight to Baltimore instead! Tuesday Jenny and I took the light rail from the airport to Camden Yards, home of the Orioles, and then walked over to the Inner Harbor and toured the National Aquarium. One of my favorite parts of the aquarium was a life-size reconstruction of the jaws of Carcharodon megalodon, a 50-foot prehistoric shark similar to the great whites of today. I took a picture with my cell phone. Its teeth are about the size of your hand. I love sharks and used to read about them as a kid, but I’d never seen a life-size set of its jaws in person. I also want to note how WONDERFUL it was to take a light rail line from an airport into the city! In a few years DFW and DAL (sort of) will have the same capability.

Anyway, the new-hire luncheon went great, including a new format that gets the new hires to interact extensively with the leaders who attend. This luncheon had several directors, at least two vice presidents, and CEO Gary Kelly. How cool is it that senior leaders, including the CEO, will come hang out with our new hires?!? That night we sold new-hire sponsorships in exchange for entries into the first-ever SWA Duck Race, which is scheduled for May at Sea World San Antonio. Jenny and her team have been working really hard on the duck race, and I think it’s going to be a blast! Now we’re back home to relax a bit and host a CARES breakfast on Saturday before heading out to Orlando on Sunday.

It looks like many of you have already noticed, but just in case – the new poll over on the right is my poll, created just for AndyBox.com, not an ad. I’ll try to post a new topic a few times per month, so make sure you cast your “ballot”! Also note that Mitt Romney is a LIAR and is no longer a candidate. Tuesday night he promised his followers that he would stay in the race until the convention. Today he announced that he is withdrawing from the race. I can’t take him out b/c it’ll reset the poll. Just don’t vote for him. =-)

February Preview

February looks to be a very busy month in the Box household. We’ll be providing a full month of CARES activities for our residents, including two dinners, a breakfast, and a party on Sunday for the Game of Which We Do Not Speak. You can see our event calendar on my CARES page. Email me if you’d like to volunteer at an event! We’re also planning trips to five different SWA cities so Jenny can run new hires events. Next week is Chicago and Baltimore. The next week is Orlando. The following week is Oakland and Phoenix. I’m tagging along as her personal assistant/roadie/bodyguard in exchange for free room and board. Our next doctor’s appointment is scheduled for the final week of Feb, when we hope to learn whether BB is a him or a her. Whew! So forgive me if AndyBox.com isn’t quite as active as usual, but I’ll do my best!
